A needle that settles, then says which way to turn

Most phone tuners wobble or jump to the wrong string. This one locks onto the string you play, holds the reading still, and says which way to turn the peg.

  • The Guitar, Ukulele & Bass Tuner icon, an amber needle upright over five ticks with the centre tick green, above the app name on a dark background. Screens of the app arrive with the release.

What you get

  • A needle that settles

Readings are smoothed, so the needle holds still instead of flapping between sharp and flat. Then a plain line says which way to turn the peg.

  • Pick the string. It stays picked

Tap the string you are tuning and the tuner stays on it until you tap it again. Or choose Auto, and it follows the string you play.

  • Drop D and open G, free

Every preset tuning is free: standard, drop D, open G, half step down and more for guitar, plus ukulele and bass presets. No limits.

  • Match it by ear

A reference tone for every string of the current tuning, to tune by ear or to check a string. Reference tones work with the microphone off.

  • Mic off? Here is the fix

If the microphone is off, the tuner shows the one setting to change and an Open Settings button, not a blank needle.

  • Pro, when you want more

A strobe view for fine tuning, chromatic mode with more instruments (violin, banjo and mandolin), tunings you build yourself, and themes.

Tuning, every preset tuning for guitar, ukulele and bass, and the reference tones are free, with no limits, no account and no ads. Pro adds a strobe view, more instruments, custom tunings and themes. Sound is analyzed on your iPhone and never recorded; details are in the privacy policy.

How it works

  1. Allow the microphone

The tuner listens through the microphone. Tap Allow the microphone and choose Allow when iPhone asks. Sound is analyzed on your iPhone and never recorded.

  2. Pick the instrument and tuning

Tap the instrument and tuning name at the top to choose guitar, ukulele or bass and a tuning such as standard or drop D. Tap a string to pick it, or leave it on Auto.

  3. Play a string and turn the peg

Pluck one string and let it ring. The needle settles and the line under it says which way to turn the peg, then says In tune.

Questions and answers

What is Guitar, Ukulele & Bass Tuner?

Guitar, Ukulele & Bass Tuner is a tuner for iPhone. It listens to your guitar, ukulele or bass through the microphone, shows a needle that settles instead of flapping, and says which way to turn the peg. On the Home Screen it is called Guitar Tuner. It is made by Winton Gee.

How much does it cost?

Tuning is free, with no limits. Pro is $4.99 a month or $14.99 once. Prices vary by country. There is no free trial; the free version is the way to try it.

What is free, and what does Pro add?

Tuning, every preset tuning for guitar, ukulele and bass, the reference tones, picking a string and the microphone fix are free, with no limits. Pro adds a strobe view for fine tuning, chromatic mode with more instruments (violin, banjo and mandolin), tunings you build yourself, and themes.

Does it record or send my audio?

No. The tuner uses the microphone only while the tuner screen is open. Sound is analyzed on your iPhone to find the pitch and is never recorded, stored or sent anywhere. There is no account, no analytics and no server of ours.

Why does the needle jump on other tuners, and what does this one do differently?

A plucked string sounds its note plus harmonics, and the sound changes as it fades, so a tuner that shows every raw reading moves with each one. This one finds the pitch with the McLeod pitch method (MPM), which holds onto the note when harmonics are strong. It then smooths the readings: it takes the middle of the last few, ignores unclear ones, and holds the needle still before it says In tune. When the string fades, it says Listening instead of leaving an old reading on screen.

Does it work without the microphone?

Partly. The reference tones and the tuning charts work without it, so you can tune by ear. The needle needs the microphone. To turn it on, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and turn on Guitar Tuner, or tap Open Settings on the tuner screen.

Which instruments and tunings does it have?

Guitar: standard, drop D, half step down, full step down, open G, open D, DADGAD and drop C. Ukulele: standard GCEA, low G and baritone DGBE. Bass: standard EADG, five string BEADG and drop D. All of them are free. Pro adds chromatic mode with violin, banjo and mandolin, and tunings you build yourself.

How do I cancel or restore Pro?

To cancel, open the Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose Guitar, Ukulele & Bass Tuner and tap Cancel Subscription, at least 24 hours before the period ends. To restore on a new iPhone, open the app's Settings and tap Restore purchases. Pro Lifetime is a one-time purchase, so there is nothing to cancel.
